{"id":15384,"date":"2023-01-13T14:52:11","date_gmt":"2023-01-13T14:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/projects.rapidmind.in\/navgati\/?p=15384"},"modified":"2023-04-26T08:12:58","modified_gmt":"2023-04-26T08:12:58","slug":"the-quiet-coach-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projects.rapidmind.in\/navgati\/the-quiet-coach-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Quiet Coach-2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone who\u2019s trained to be a coach is familiar with the GROW framework \u2013 an acronym that expands to Genuineness, Realism, Optimism and Wit.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, ok, just checking to see if you\u2019re really paying attention to this &#128513;<\/p>\n<p>GROW is a framework developed by Sir John Whitmore and team in the 1980s and it\u2019s an extremely helpful way to navigate the flow of a coaching conversation (and many other conversations as well but that\u2019s a topic for another post).<\/p>\n<p>When a coach uses this framework, we are reaffirming to clients that we believe in their capacity to identify what they want for themselves; to reflect on their internal and external reality and to take action to help them bring about the change they want to see.<\/p>\n<p>Given how familiar everyone is with this, I\u2019m going to use this space to talk about some common challenges I\u2019ve seen coaches face with applying it in conversations.<\/p>\n<h3>Not spending enough time on the Goal<\/h3>\n<p>There are many reasons why we don\u2019t do this<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It seems like we\u2019re putting pressure on the client to articulate a firm goal<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s more exciting to get into the meat of the work<\/li>\n<li>It seems evident to us what the client should want given the context<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019ve found, time and again, that when we go back over a conversation that didn\u2019t go well, the root cause is likely to be a poorly defined goal. Contracting (the process of establishing agreement with a client on what they want) is a nuanced topic but for now, just keep in mind that it\u2019s important to always start with your favourite variation of these two questions<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> What\u2019s the change you want to bring about in your life?<\/li>\n<li>What would be a good use of our coaching conversation to help you move towards that?  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Moving straight into Options from Goal<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ve all been there. A client says, \u201cI want to think about what I can do to influence my stakeholder\u201d. The coach says \u201cOk, what can you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If this was a comic strip, the third panel would be the client saying (in a thought bubble, most clients are very polite) \u201cif I knew that, would I be here, you dodo?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\nThe coach here is coming from a well-meaning space; where they trust the client\u2019s ability to come up with solutions. But it is important to provide the scaffolding \u2013 the supportive questions that help a client broaden their thinking. It is in that expanded space that the client can see more solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Take your time helping the client explore reality.<\/p>\n<h3> Hurrying into Will (action planning) at the slightest sign that the client has an Option<\/h3>\n<p>When a client comes up with an idea to resolve their situation, it\u2019s possible (though not always) that this is an idea that has been knocking around their brains for a while. If they haven\u2019t taken action on it, it\u2019s possible that there is something missing.<\/p>\n<p> I find it very helpful to slow some clients down at this stage and ask if there could be any other options that could work.<\/p>\n<h3> Not spending enough time on the Will<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019ve been in this situation several times where I recognize there\u2019s only five minutes left in a conversation and there\u2019s just about time to ask \u201cDid you get what you needed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nCoaching is a process that works because a coach helps deepen the awareness of the client and further the action the client will take post the session. Both parts are equally important.<\/p>\n<p> So make sure you have enough time to ask these questions<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> What has become clearer to you vis-\u00e0-vis the goal you started with? <\/li>\n<li>What would you like to do to act on this awareness (and other action planning questions as appropriate)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3> Here\u2019s what you can do to strengthen your application of the GROW framework<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Spend enough time and energy on establishing the Goal\n<ul type=\"a\">\n<li>What\u2019s the change you want to bring about in your life?<\/li>\n<li>What would be a good use of our coaching conversation to help you move towards that?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Help the client explore their internal and external Reality \u2013 this is where true change happens<\/li>\n<li>Invite them to consider more Options than the initial one<\/li>\n<li>Account for enough time to consolidate the Will\n<ul type=\"a\">\n<li>What has become clearer to you vis-\u00e0-vis the goal you started with?<\/li>\n<li>What would you like to do to act on this awareness (and other action planning questions as appropriate)?<\/li>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p> <i><br \/>\nLet me know what you think of this post please and do write in if you have questions you\u2019d like me to address here.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone who\u2019s trained to be a coach is familiar with the GROW framework \u2013 an acronym that expands to Genuineness, Realism, Optimism and Wit.
