{"id":18006,"date":"2023-06-21T05:23:40","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T05:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/projects.rapidmind.in\/navgati\/?p=18006"},"modified":"2023-06-22T08:32:36","modified_gmt":"2023-06-22T08:32:36","slug":"the-quiet-coach-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projects.rapidmind.in\/navgati\/the-quiet-coach-15\/","title":{"rendered":"The Quiet Coach \u2013 15"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Holding accountability for our clients \u2013 what does that mean?<\/h3>\n<p>Consider this hypothetical coaching client of yours called Anish. He\u2019s been working with you on taking the next step in his career. A month ago he had identified that he wanted to have a conversation with his manager to share his aspirations and ask for support. You\u2019ve had two coaching conversations with him post that and both times he has said he hadn\u2019t found the time or that she was too busy.<\/p>\n<p>Take a minute (and perhaps write down) what you would say to Anish if you were helping him with being accountable.<\/p>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<p>Back? Good job if you did that practise! For those of you who were in a hurry, here are some options \u2013 which would you choose?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<dl>\n<i>&#8211;\tWhy are you procrastinating about having this conversation? <\/i><\/dl>\n<dl><i>&#8211;\tCoaching is a process which works only if you\u2019re actively experimenting with the awareness you\u2019re having in our conversations.<\/i><\/dl>\n<dl><i>&#8211;\tShould we reschedule this meeting till you\u2019ve had a chance to have that conversation?<\/i><\/dl>\n<dl><i>&#8211;\tIt\u2019s a little disappointing and I\u2019m wondering if this process is really helping you<\/i><\/dl>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ha ha, that\u2019s a trick question and all those answers are wrong. So what would be a better way to handle this situation? Let\u2019s look at what accountability in coaching is and is not.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, it is not professional nagging. My mom (bless her soul) would have a running list of things I was supposed to do and gently remind me of them every day (when I protested, she would complain about being my unpaid secretary). There\u2019s a lot of value in having someone like that in your life but that is not the remit of a coach.<\/p>\n<p>Accountability, when understood well, is a powerful tool for a client\u2019s self-awareness and growth and not just something that needs to be done at the end of a conversation. When we hold accountability well, it provides several benefits<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>     It increases the chances that clients will act on their plans because they know they have a partner (the coach) who will notice whether they act or not.<\/li>\n<li>    It can make the client feel cared about \u2013 when the coach remembers what they had committed and follows up on it<\/li>\n<li>    It helps clients slow down, take stock of what they have achieved and what they\u2019ve learnt in the process.<\/li>\n<li>     It can also be a useful way to deepen the client\u2019s self-awareness \u2013 reflecting on why they\u2019ve not done something they committed to themselves can bring to light some deeper resistance or issue that needs to be addressed<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Doing it well looks like this:<\/h3>\n<p>At the end of the coaching conversation, when the client has made an action plan for themselves (another post coming up on that soon), the coach asks a couple of questions like these:<\/p>\n<table class=\"trainingtable ubunR\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>   \u2022   What could possibly come in the way of you acting on these plans? How could you deal with those?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>  \u2022   What would you like to hold yourself accountable for? (or What would you like to share about these actions the next time we meet?)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>And at the beginning of the next conversation, the coach remembers to ask what happened using questions like:<\/p>\n<table class=\"trainingtable ubunR\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>       \u2022    You had made XYZ plans for yourself \u2013 how did you do on them?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>   \u2022    What did you learn about yourself in taking these actions?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>   \u2022    What are you happy about?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>   \u2022   What would you like to continue to work on?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>On the occasions where a client does not keep the commitments they made to themselves (like young Anish in the case we started with), the coach is curious about where that behaviour is coming from and says something like<\/p>\n<table class=\"trainingtable ubunR\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>     \u2022       You seemed to have a lot of energy about the plans you made but it seems like it\u2019s been difficult to make them happen; I\u2019m wondering what\u2019s going on for you here<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>  \u2022       I\u2019ve noticed that you\u2019ve made this plan to speak to your manager twice in the past and that has not happened \u2013 could there be a deeper block to taking action (than calendars and availability)?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important here that the coach is completely non-judgemental, in words and in tone. This is not a \u201cwhy didn\u2019t you do your homework?\u201d conversation but a \u201cI\u2019m genuinely interested in you\u201d one.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve personally found that exploring why a client did not follow through on their commitments to themselves has led to very interesting insights \u2013 some of them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>       They made the action plan because they felt that was what I wanted (and were unconsciously complying with what they thought other authority figures in their lives wanted)<\/li>\n<li>      They felt overwhelmed by how much work they thought the action would take<\/li>\n<li>      They were scared about what consequences the change would have on their relationships\/lives<\/li>\n<li>       The problem had deeper levels that needed to be explored<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019d love to hear what challenges you\u2019ve had with this aspect of coaching and what has worked for you.
